Building ClassGini: My Journey Creating a School OS

After 15 years of building software for others - enterprise systems, healthcare platforms, e-commerce solutions - I found myself asking a question that wouldn't go away: "What would I build if I could build anything?" The answer led me to ClassGini.

The Moment That Started It All

It was a conversation with my cousin. Her daughter had just finished Class 10 with excellent marks. "What stream should she take?" she asked me.

I had no idea. I'm a software architect, not an education counselor. But I tried to help - Googled, asked friends, looked at various career websites. The experience was frustrating:

If we - an educated, urban, tech-savvy family - struggled with this, what happens in millions of households without these advantages?

The Problem Is Bigger Than I Thought

I spent the next few months researching. What I found was disturbing:

Schools had ERPs for administration. They had learning management systems. But nothing that genuinely helped students succeed in life - not just in exams.

What If We Could Build Different?

I started imagining a different system. Not an ERP. Not a learning app. A Student Success Operating System that would:

Know Each Student

Not just marks, but strengths, interests, learning patterns

Guide Career Paths

Connect aptitude to careers, not generic advice

Include Parents

Partners in education, not just fee payers

Use AI Wisely

Insights, not just data. Recommendations, not just reports.

Taking the Leap

In 2024, I made the decision. After 15 years of building for others, I would build this for myself - and for millions of students who deserve better.

It wasn't easy. Leaving steady income. Explaining to family why I'm "starting over." The fear of failure after years of success.

But some things are worth the risk.

What We're Building

ClassGini is a Student Success Operating System. Here's what makes it different:

1. Student-Centric, Not Admin-Centric

Every feature is designed around the question: "Does this help the student succeed?" Not "Does this make administration easier?"

2. Parent as Partner

Parents get real insights, not just report cards. "Your child is strong in logical reasoning but needs support in verbal expression. Here's what you can do."

3. Career Guidance Built-In

Starting from Class 8, students explore careers. By Class 10, they have data-driven recommendations for stream selection.

4. Works for All Schools

Not just elite urban schools. We're designing for:

Where We Are Now

We're currently:

It's hard. Every day brings new challenges. But every conversation with a parent who says "This is exactly what we needed" or a student who discovered a career they didn't know existed - that's why we do this.

What I've Learned So Far

  1. Domain expertise matters more than tech sophistication. Understanding how schools actually work was harder than building the software.
  2. Parents are underserved. They want to help but don't know how. Give them tools, not just information.
  3. Simple > Complex. Schools don't want more features. They want features that work without training.
  4. Trust is everything. Schools won't give you student data until they trust you completely. Earn it.
  5. India is not one market. What works in Delhi won't work in rural Bihar. Design for diversity.

The Vision

In 5 years, I want ClassGini to be the platform that schools run on - not for administration, but for student success. I want every student in India to have access to the kind of guidance that today only privileged few get.

I want the cousin's daughter scenario to be impossible - no child should make life decisions without proper information and guidance.

It's ambitious. Maybe naive. But after 15 years of building what others asked for, I finally get to build what I believe matters.
